About the Book
Between Horizons: Life in Afghanistan’s Central Highlands is a bilingual English–German documentary photography book capturing the dramatic landscapes, rich cultural heritage and everyday lives of communities across Bamyan, Band-e Amir, Ghor and Daikundi. Through photographs taken between 2022 and 2025, it offers a visual journey through a remarkable region, exploring its landscapes, traditions and the resilience of its people.
The Story Behind the Book
Some places stay with us long after we have left them. Afghanistan’s Central Highlands is one of those places — a region of striking contrasts, where rugged mountains and vast open landscapes meet the rhythms of everyday life.
Created from three years of living and working in the region, Between Horizons grew from a desire to look beyond the headlines and capture moments that might otherwise go unseen. The photographs offer glimpses of daily life, local traditions, quiet encounters and the enduring relationship between people and the land they inhabit.
This book is both a personal record of a remarkable period and an invitation to discover Afghanistan through a different lens. It celebrates the beauty of its landscapes, the richness of its cultural heritage and the dignity, creativity and resilience of its people.
Each photograph holds a fragment of a larger story — a moment, a place or an encounter that has stayed with me. Together, they form a portrait of the Central Highlands as I experienced it between 2022 and 2025: complex, beautiful and full of contrasts. I hope these images encourage readers to look beyond familiar narratives and discover the region with fresh eyes.
